Nikola Kocmarska

My journey really started when I was young. Watching films was a favourite pastime of mine and my mom used to buy me tons of cheap DVDs from the newsagents. We were regulars and the shop assistant recognized us every time we came, as she saved us the best films.

When I was growing up, I never really realized that I could be a part of the process of making films. A the time I was studying at a Slovak gymnasium, which pretty much navigated me towards sciences, history and not really art., film and creativity. But after spending a year at Slovak Technical University, studying architecture, I realized that I didn´t belong there. I saw how people were passionate about architecture, so I decided to do what I am passionate about, which is films.

So I travelled to the UK on my own and studied film production technologies at Nottingham Trent University. I´ve met many wonderful people and worked on many projects (some of them through the pandemic). And I found out that I would love to work with lights!

I enjoy being helpful on set and to understand how to shape light to create beautiful cinematography. To make it artistically on point with the story and the journey of the characters. I love to be challenged and love to learn new ways of lighting a space or how to rig a light.

My future aspirations are to get my licence as an electrician and to learn how to operate more lights and to rig them as well.
